Many farmers complain that the cane starts well but later the tillers / canes die. This lowers the plant population and can finally affect the yield.
Common causes of tiller death
- Water stress: a shortage of water, or water standing in the field.
- Nutrient imbalance: not getting the right nutrition at the right time.
- Crowding and shade: late tillers cannot survive against bigger plants.
- Pests and diseases: damage at the early stage.
- Early stress: if germination and early growth are weak, the effect shows later.
Stage-wise care
Instead of doing everything at once, work stage by stage: Granules at planting, drenching after the first irrigation, and a foliar spray at 2–4 leaves.
Alongside, continue the program with 1 bag of Granules at every main fertilizer dose.
